Who does not know crystal guava? The fruit with the Latin name Psidium guajava which has a sweet and fresh taste, crunchy texture, and has almost no seeds is a fruit that is rich in benefits. Crystal guava is one of the leading commodities in Wates Village, Ngaliyan District, Semarang City, Central Java. This makes Wates Village inaugurated as the Jambu Crystal Thematic Village.

The abundance of crystal guava during the harvest season has not been handled optimally by the Wates Village community. Therefore, the Department of Agriculture Student Association (HMD) of Universitas Diponegoro invites the Wates Village community to process guava crystals into pastry and Madumongso products through the Holistic Program for Village Development and Empowerment (PHP2D) from the Ministry of Education and Culture, Ristekdikti. This activity aims to utilize crystal guava that is wasted during the harvest season, increase the economic value of crystal guava, and develop business innovations and local food-based SMEs.

On September 10, 2021, the Undip Agriculture HMD PHP2D Team held a training activity for making crystal guava pastry and honeymongso accompanied by a supervisor, namely Agus Subhan Prasetyo, S.P., M.Sc. The team distributed booklets and did a demonstration of making and packaging pastry and madumongso in front of PKK women in Wates Village. The booklet distributed contains recipes and alternative packaging that can be applied to the processing of pastries and crystal guava honeymongso. In addition, the PHP2D HMD Agriculture Team also assisted in the form of tools and materials needed in the pastry and Madumongso production process.

Mrs. Yulita Ekowati, S.E. as the Village Head of Wates welcomed the innovation proposed by the PHP2D HMD Agriculture Team. “I support the activities initiated by the younger siblings from the Undip Agricultural HMD so that guava crystals from Wates Village can be known more widely.”

Assistance in making pastry and Madumongso was carried out at Mrs. Siti’s house, as a representative of PKK women, on October 21, 2021. This activity resulted in an agreement with representatives of PKK women, namely Mrs. Harmanto and Mrs. Siti, to carry out the production process of guava pastry and honeymongso crystals continuously. Madumongso and crystal guava pastry which were processed independently by representatives of PKK women in Wates Village have been marketed and received positive responses from consumers. Marketing is done through the Instagram PHP2D HMD Agriculture, namely @siguava.id, and the social media of each team member. The production process is expected to be able to increase innovation and the welfare of Wates Village residents.
